Internal testing of VLA Lite on cars with two Orin-X chips has begun, Liu Xianming wrote on 15 September 2026. He explains how XPENG is adapting second-generation VLA to hardware with less computing power, bringing the model development behind XOS 6.3.0 to more cars. The announced rollouts currently cover China.

Infini-VLA draws on the previous 30 seconds of visual information when making driving decisions. According to Liu, a cache reuses computations so that longer memory does not require substantially more computing power. X-Foresight predicts possible traffic changes up to six seconds ahead. Both windows reflect the limits of the car’s hardware and were presented at the TIME event on 27 August.
For Max cars with one Turing chip, XPENG uses distillation: a smaller AI model learns from a larger one so it can run with less computing power. Training focuses on commuting and everyday driving. XPENG also redesigns the model architecture for the chip to retain as much of the larger model’s capability as possible.
L4 is a long-term development goal for the Ultra system. Approved L4 driving for current cars has not been announced.
The Chinese rollout of XOS 6.3.0 started on 22 September, alongside VLA Lite for Max cars with one Turing chip. The XOS history explains how the Chinese and international software versions differ.
XPENG’s target of European regulatory approval in the first half of 2027 concerns VLA 2.0 generally. The company has not announced the distilled VLA Lite versions for Europe. Whether European cars with one Turing chip or two Orin-X chips will receive Lite remains unknown, and no European rollout schedule has been announced for these versions.
