Volkswagen weighs XPENG architecture for its European EVs, Manager Magazin reports

Volkswagen is considering taking CEA, the electronic architecture it developed with XPENG for its cars in China, into models for Europe as well. The German business magazine Manager Magazin reported this on Monday 26 October 2026, citing people it did not name. Neither Volkswagen nor XPENG has confirmed it, so the story is unconfirmed.

From China to Europe’s volume models

According to the magazine, Thomas Schäfer, who runs the Volkswagen brand, is proposing to group management that about 75% of next-generation Volkswagen, Škoda and Cupra models use CEA. He was due to present the proposal on Tuesday 27 October. His team estimates the switch could save the group €4-5 billion in its most important segments. CnEVPost says the report names the ID. Golf, the ID. Passat and the Škoda Enyaq as possible candidates.

CnEVPost also reports doubts about whether adapting the architecture to European regulations would be as simple and cheap as the proposal’s supporters claim.

Rivian could lose part of its role

The proposal cuts into Volkswagen’s software partnership with Rivian in the US. That partnership involves a $5.8 billion investment and sits at the centre of group CEO Oliver Blume’s software strategy.

So far CEA is built for China

XPENG and Volkswagen signed a master agreement to develop the architecture together on 22 July 2024. In August 2025 they widened it: besides Volkswagen’s EV platforms, the architecture is also going into the group’s petrol and plug-in hybrid platforms in China. When ID. UNYX 08 production started in March 2026, Volkswagen said the first model with CEA would reach the market later in 2026.

Both Volkswagen models with XPENG technology so far, the ID. UNYX 08 and the ID. UNYX 09, are built for the Chinese market. When XPENG opened its technology to other carmakers in October, Volkswagen was the example it chose.
