On 17 September XPENG Global wrote on X that the X9 was Hong Kong’s best-selling luxury electric MPV in August 2026, the same claim it made on 19 August about July. The post carries no figure, and XPENG does not say where luxury begins. Hong Kong’s Transport Department does the rest: every month it publishes a list of every newly registered vehicle with make, model, fuel, passenger seats and taxable value, so the claim can be checked.
In August the list held 29 new XPENG X9s: 13 Performance AWD, 12 Standard Range and 4 Long Range. This is how the month looked for electric MPVs with at least six passenger seats:
- Maxus Mifa 7: 75
- Wuling Darion EV: 45
- BYD M6: 31
- XPENG X9: 29
- Zeekr 009: 15
- Denza D9: 6
All 29 X9s sit in the HK$ 300,000 to 500,000 taxable-value band, and so do the Zeekr 009 and the Denza D9. The Mifa 7, Darion EV and M6 mostly sit below HK$ 300,000. Read that way, the X9 is first in its class and fourth among electric MPVs overall. From July to August its count fell from 50 to 29, while the Zeekr 009 went from 33 to 15.
The G6 is XPENG’s big seller in Hong Kong
The X9 is the smaller seller of XPENG’s two models in the city. The G6 was registered 71 times in August and 64 times in July, which put XPENG as a brand at 100 new cars in Hong Kong in August and 114 in July. Hong Kong registered 2,404 new private cars in August, and 1,804 of them, three in four, were electric.
The importer and the three variants
XPENG arrived in Hong Kong in May 2024 with Sime Darby Motors as importer, and the X9 was there from the first day as the seven-seater beside the G6. The current 2026 car comes in three variants: Standard Range with front-wheel drive and 535 km WLTP, Long Range with 615 km, and AWD Performance with 580 km.
