XPENG has cut its four product lines to two, 36Kr reports

XPENG has merged its four product lines into two, the Chinese business outlet 36Kr reported on Monday 28 September, citing several unnamed industry sources. CnEVPost carried the story the same morning. An XPENG employee has since confirmed the change to XPENG Guru in a personal conversation. XPENG has said nothing about it in public.

Inside XPENG, a product line is the unit that defines and develops a group of models. G covers large SUVs such as the GX and G9L. F covered the P-series sedans, including P7 and P7+, while I handled cars for markets outside China. F and I have now joined G. D continues to develop the Mona series.

The change concerns internal responsibility for product definition and development. In our view, bringing I and G together could draw development for China and international markets, including Europe, closer together.

The gap between China and Europe used to be measured in months. The updated G6 and G9 launched in China on 13 March 2025; their European unveiling on 12 June followed around three months later.

L03 and G9L show a shorter interval. L03 was presented in China on 2 July and launched globally in Munich on 16 July 2026. G9L launched in China on 17 September, with its global launch scheduled for 12 October in Paris. These launches already show closer coordination, although a direct connection with the reorganisation has not been established.

A new remit for the markets outside China

For European readers, the former I line is particularly relevant. Its previous head now oversees XPENG’s activities outside China, excluding vehicle sales outside China, according to 36Kr. The former head of F leads product definition within G, at the same level as before.

The report does not identify which line will be responsible for the European L03. The Chinese car belongs to the Mona series. We think plans for closer coordination may already have shaped development and production of the international L03.

What 36Kr says it is for

36Kr sees the consolidation as a way to pool development resources and reduce competition between XPENG models with similar prices and target buyers.

XPENG spent RMB 2.91 billion (about €380m) on research and development in the second quarter, 32.1 per cent more than a year earlier. Deliveries in the quarter came to 103,295 cars, up 0.1 per cent. The rest of the quarter is in our story on the second-quarter results. Across the first eight months of 2026 XPENG delivered 243,111 cars, around 10.5 per cent fewer than in the same period last year, by CnEVPost’s count.

The latest figures show deliveries rising from the second to the third quarter. XPENG delivered 118,390 vehicles in Q3 2026, up 15 per cent from Q2. September contributed 41,256, 5 per cent more than August. Monthly deliveries outside China also passed 10,000 for the first time, XPENG Global announced on 1 October.
