He Xiaopeng showed the GX at the Beijing motor show on 24 April 2026 as a vehicle designed for the L4 era, and as China’s first fully in-house developed, factory-integrated robotaxi prototype intended for mass production. It carries up to four Turing chips at 3,000 TOPS and runs VLA 2.0.
Twenty-four days later, on 18 May, the first mass-produced robotaxi rolled out in Guangzhou. The production car has four Turing chips with a stated combined computing power of 3,000 TOPS. XPENG calls it the first time in China that a carmaker has reached mass production of a robotaxi with the whole development done in house.
Pilot operation was still planned for the second half of 2026. In May the target was to begin fully driverless operation without a safety driver on the Chinese home market in early 2027.
The technical choice
The robotaxi runs without lidar and without high-definition maps. Decisions are made by VLA 2.0, which skips the translation into language, and XPENG puts the system’s response time at under 80 milliseconds without describing the measurement method.
XPENG obtained a permit for road testing with intelligent, connected vehicles in Guangzhou in January 2026 and set up its own robotaxi business unit in March. The cabin has privacy glass and comfort gravity seats. To that come rear screens and voice control. Amap is the first global ecosystem partner, and the development kit is to be opened to partners.
Rollout of VLA 2.0 and sales figures
VLA 2.0 rolled out in March 2026, and XPENG published its first report on the system at the show. The report gave four figures without publishing a method or defining satisfaction: orders for the Ultra series rose 118 per cent in a month, and nearly 100,000 consumers took part in in-store demonstrations at 98 per cent satisfaction. The time from test drive to order fell 44.7 per cent, and 98.52 per cent of users activated the assistance features daily in their first week with the car.
Deliveries outside China passed 45,000 cars in 2025, growth of 96 per cent. Around 200 journalists from Europe, Asia, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa joined XPENG’s China tour with factory visits and VLA 2.0 test drives.
