XPENG switched on its first megawatt charger on 15 September 2026. It stands in Hong Kong, was built with the local charging operator Halo Energy, and is open to electric cars of every brand. XPENG calls it the city’s first publicly accessible megawatt charger and the group’s first anywhere.
The figures on XPENG’s poster: 1 MW peak, 1,000 amps through a liquid-cooled cable, a 400 kWh battery store and a grid connection of no more than 240 kW. XPENG’s own small print says the peak applies under ideal conditions and that the car sets the limit in practice.
A battery between the grid and the car
240 kW is what one ordinary fast charger draws from the grid today. A megawatt charger without a battery would need a connection four times as strong, and that kind of grid work takes years and costs more than the charger. So the battery store sits in between: the grid fills it at 240 kW whether a car is there or not, and the store hands over up to 1 MW when a car asks for it.
On the poster’s figures, that covers several cars in a row. Nine minutes at full power draws 150 kWh, so the 400 kWh store takes two such sessions with room to spare while the grid tops it up. Empty to full takes an hour and 40 minutes at 240 kW.
Halo Energy knows the principle. In November 2023 it opened Hong Kong’s first battery-buffered fast-charging station at Gold Coast Piazza in Tuen Mun. Where the new site stands, neither party says.
No XPENG draws a megawatt yet
There is a wide gap between the site’s 1 MW and what the cars can take. The highest charging figure XPENG has published is the 619.6 kW from the G9L charging test on 14 September, and a New G6 is rated at 451 kW. The XPENG G9L page has the figure for each variant. In Denmark, Clever’s new site in Rødovre gave 600 kW to a single car, and a G6 reached 80 percent in 11½ minutes.
XPENG announced its first company-owned chargers outside mainland China in March 2025, in Hong Kong as well. Now it calls the city the starting point for more cities and more users. Which cities, and when, it does not say.
