XPENG Guru: Behind the wheel of the XPENG G9L
I have had the opportunity to test-drive pre-production versions of the XPENG G9L on two separate occasions. The first was a drive in the range-extended (EREV) model in Denmark, and the second was the pure electric (BEV) version in Munich during the L03 launch event. Both cars are camouflaged as shown below. For me, drives like these are about building knowledge and insight into the car and its software - to share here on the site and in online communities, and to give feedback to XPENG. I am under a strict embargo and cannot yet share impressions or details from those drives; more on tech and specifications will follow once the embargo lifts.

G9L, G9 and GX
The XPENG G9L sits above today’s G9 in Europe. While it draws heavily on the design and technology of the China flagship GX, it is a separate, slightly smaller car. Early coverage sometimes mixed the G9L and GX - they are separate programmes (internal codes G02 and G01).

European press release (3 August 2026)
XPENG’s European press release (shared via XPENG Denmark) confirms:
- First official images of the XPENG G9L released in China on 3 August 2026
- European premiere at the Paris Motor Show, 12-18 October 2026, with European variants shown there - notably the luxurious 6-seat model
- Positioned above the current G9 as XPENG’s New Tech Flagship SUV; L = Luxury
- Engineered from the ground up for Euro NCAP, C-NCAP and ANCAP safety requirements
- Supports launch across 64 international markets
- Will be sold alongside the current XPENG G9
Europe & Denmark
Until Paris, the current large SUV on sale in Denmark remains the XPENG G9. XPENG states the XPENG G9L will join it in the line-up - sold alongside, not as a silent rename. Model-year equipment differences for today’s G9 live on G9 Differences. XPENG G9L vs G9 vs GX: see G9L, G9 and GX. Compact European SEPA 3.0 sibling: L03. Early European packaging (6-seat look, boot volumes cited so far, four-wheel steering figures): Early European 6-seat look.
Early European 6-seat look
Before Paris, the first clear public look at a 6-seat G9L is a pre-production walkaround filmed at XPENG HQ (InstaAutoVlog on YouTube, August 2026). That car is the EU-oriented story - captain chairs in row 2 plus a third row - not the China five-seat launch packaging.
- Layout shown: 6 seats (captain chairs in row 2 + third row); third row folds electrically
- Boot volumes cited in that walkaround (pre-production / journalist figures): about 935 L total · about 540 L with the third row folded · about 275 L with the third row up - different from China marketing 1,152 L five-seat
- Four-wheel steering (XPENG-confirmed): steering angle ±7.5° · turning radius 5.4 m
- Frunk about 84 L (enough for a charge cable) - cited in the same walkaround
- Magnetic accessory mounting points (ceiling / door panels) and powered accessory mounts for tablet or laptop tray (shown with the second-row lounge - same family of mounts as on the L03) - InstaAutoVlog
- Power doors with soft-close; driver door closes when the brake pedal is pressed (shown in multiple walkthrough demos)
- List prices, WLTP, EU powertrains and the full European equipment list still wait for Paris

Munich & global road test (7 August 2026)

On 7 August 2026, CEO He Xiaopeng posted on Weibo about camouflaged G9L road testing in Munich with international media and guests. That is the same Munich programme as under Test drives above - his video includes a brief cameo of me and my son near the end. Key points (CEO messaging):
- Developed for 64 countries/regions (same figure as the European press release)
- Calm, stable handling on narrow Munich streets and Belgian cobblestones, credited to smart chassis / rear-wheel steering - XPENG figures under Early European 6-seat look
- Restates positioning: global large five-seat tech flagship, ~CN¥300,000-class tech benchmark, five-star safety ambition
The same day, the official XPENG Motors Weibo account posted a parallel global road-test wave (hashtag: road tests covering 26 countries and regions):
- 26 countries/regions · 6.74+ million km of testing - framed as validating a global flagship to global standards (separate from the 64 launch-market figure)
- Programme described as starting about three years ago: “building a global car has no shortcuts”
- Media quote posters and a montage video - handling, chassis comfort and rear-wheel steering, with quotes from international and Chinese media (including me / xpeng.guru)

All four quote posters under Gallery → Global road test & media quotes. Videos: He Xiaopeng - Munich road test · Global road test montage.
Paris Motor Show
At the Paris Motor Show (12-18 October 2026), XPENG says it will reveal full details for the European model, including:

China pre-sale (11 August 2026)
At the Guangzhou global debut on 11 August 2026, XPENG opened China pre-orders for the G9L from CN¥ 259,800. That is a China pre-sale figure for the Chinese market.
The debut also confirmed the earlier China line-up story: BEV and super range-extender (EREV) across six named variants (matrix below), still under the “300,000-yuan-class tech benchmark” positioning - with entry pre-sale under that band. On stage, He Xiaopeng reconfirmed the global programme figures already covered under European press release and Munich & global road test: 64 markets / 3,000+ regulatory requirements, about three years of development, testing across 26 countries/regions, and 6.74 million km of real-world road testing.
Limited-time China order perks on the debut slides (11 August 2026 → launch day): CN¥ 1,000 deposit credited as CN¥ 3,000 toward purchase; free Fjord Grey paint (CN¥ 6,000 list) and Sahara Orange interior (CN¥ 3,000 list); 21" Vortex wheels at CN¥ 3,000 (list 10,000) and 22" Petal sports wheels at CN¥ 6,000 (list 12,000). Only in China. Primary China social sources: Weibo @小鹏汽车 (pre-sale price) and @XP-何小鹏 (debut / stage remarks).
China launch trims (six variants)
Trim matrix shown on stage in Guangzhou (China marketing; range is China CLTC). Also shown alongside: EREV AWD EV-only range up to 435 km CLTC.
| Trim | Powertrain options shown |
|---|---|
| Max | 702 km BEV RWD |
| Ultra SE | 660 km BEV AWD · 1602 km EREV AWD |
| Ultra | 660 km BEV AWD |
| Ultra Flagship (旗舰) | 755 km BEV AWD · 1602 km EREV AWD |
Chinese reveal - He Xiaopeng (3 August 2026)
The same day, XPENG CEO He Xiaopeng shared the first official details for the domestic market on Weibo and in an official video: “The global large five-seater tech flagship, the 300,000-yuan-class tech benchmark - XPENG G9L is here.” Figures below are early specifications - scope as in the Fact sheet (China) disclaimer.
Positioning
He Xiaopeng says the programme started three years ago with a brief to R&D: build a global large five-seat tech flagship SUV that, versus “99%” of cars in the ~CN¥300,000 class, is safer, more capable on tech, and better looking. In local messaging the XPENG G9L is framed as a tech benchmark in that China price band.
Tech highlights from the reveal
Highlights XPENG and He Xiaopeng put on the record during the reveal:
| Topic | Early detail |
|---|---|
| Charging | 800V platform · BEV marketing up to 450 km added in 9 minutes; China walkthroughs also cite about 300 km in 9 minutes for EREV (China marketing cycles) |
| Seats | AI Active Fit seat tech with 91 pressure sensors · sensitivity down to 2 grams · auto support by body type / posture · early announced feature - standard vs option not stated |
| Compute | Up to 2,250 TOPS AI compute - same as Ultra with 3 × Turing |
| Assisted driving | First major upgrade of XPENG’s second-generation VLA - debut slides say software version 6.3.0 is coming (China marketing) |
| Chassis | Aluminium wishbone / H-arm layout · dual-chamber air suspension · DCC · steer-by-wire rear-wheel steering (China debut slides) |
| E-drive / SiC | Hybrid silicon-carbide (SiC) power electronics; IEEE-cited efficiency figures on stage: inverter up to 98.7% · e-drive up to 93.5% (China marketing) |
| Architecture | Shares the SEPA 3.0 “three-electrics” base with the GX (China debut slide) |
| Dynamics | Fastest moose-test result in its class (according to XPENG) |
| Cabin comfort | 33 speakers · dual-zone refrigerated compartment · power doors · Zero Gravity seats and 1,152 L boot called out on-screen in the CEO video (early announcement) |
Equipment level (standard vs option) for AI seats, speakers, fridge, power doors, AI projection headlights and similar cabin/exterior tech is not confirmed for G9L in the early announcements - treat walkthrough details as “shown on China cars”, not as every trim. On GX, AI digital projection headlights are optional. European specs wait for Paris.
Dimensions & seating (China)
From the MIIT batch 407 filing (May 2026): length 5,120 mm, width 1,999 mm, height 1,782 / 1,788 / 1,795 mm (varies by config), wheelbase 3,100 mm, homologated as a five-seater (2+3) - one CN filing variant. That matches the Chinese slogan “global large five-seater tech flagship”: in China the story is second-row luxury and space, not a third row.
Europe: early 6-seat packaging, cited boot volumes and four-wheel steering figures are collected under Europe → Early European 6-seat look. Official EU specs wait for Paris.
Powertrains (China - catalog / MIIT)
Local tax-catalog and MIIT-era reporting list BEV and EREV, each with RWD and AWD. Range figures below use domestic cycles (CLTC for BEV, WLTC EV-only for EREV) - see the fact sheet disclaimer.
BEV
| RWD | AWD | |
|---|---|---|
| Peak power | 270 kW (rear) | 430 kW (160 + 270 kW) |
| Battery | 91.9 kWh or 110 kWh (NMC / LFP reported) | |
| CLTC range (reported span) | 672-805 km across variants (e.g. RWD 110 kWh up to ~805 km · AWD 91.9 kWh from ~672 km) | |
EREV
| RWD | AWD | |
|---|---|---|
| Generator | 1.5T (DAM15NTE) · ~110 kW | |
| Drive motors | 210 kW | 370 kW (160 + 210 kW) |
| Battery | 63.3 kWh LFP | |
| EV-only range (reported) | Often cited ~325 / 350 km China WLTC (RWD / AWD) | |
Sources: MIIT batch 407 (+ later catalog summaries). Some English social posts have mis-copied the large pack as “100 kWh” - catalog text is 110 kWh. Fast-charge “km in 9 minutes” figures: BEV up to 450 km in early XPENG messaging; EREV about 300 km in China walkthroughs (China marketing cycles).

Safety
XPENG says the XPENG G9L inherits flagship safety capability from the GX programme (active and passive), comes standard with aviation-grade safety redundancy, and is developed to five-star requirements from four major global assessment bodies. In the China launch video He Xiaopeng also cites XPENG’s world-first 720° seven-fold land / water / air safety challenge - that GX and G9L share the same validation story. Independent crash and rating results are still pending. The European press release names Euro NCAP, C-NCAP and ANCAP among the bodies in scope.
