The first XPENG built outside China rolled out on 1 July

On 19 June 2025 XPENG said its first production outside China would begin in July, in partnership with the Erajaya Group in Indonesia. The car is a right-hand-drive X9. The first locally built car came off the line on 1 July and was handed to a customer at the GIIAS motor show in Jakarta on 24 July.

The plant is at Purwakarta, and the June release named neither the location, the capacity, the investment nor the headcount. All of that arrived only in July.

What it means for a European buyer

The foot of that same July release is worth reading. There XPENG writes that its cars are primarily built at Zhaoqing and Guangzhou in Guangdong. That is still where a European G6, G9 or X9 comes from. The release does not say Purwakarta will supply Europe, and it says nothing about tariffs or lead times. The site is assembly of imported kits for the Southeast Asian market.

The X9 had by then been delivered more than 30,000 times worldwide and was Hong Kong’s best-selling MPV in June. Indonesia is, in XPENG’s own assessment, on its way to becoming the X9’s largest market outside China, but that is a projection.

Three Chinese X9 owners drove from Guangzhou on 5 July through Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore to Jakarta. XPENG gives the journey as nearly 2,485 miles, about 4,000 km, and calls it the first crossing of Southeast Asia and the equator by a Chinese electric car of the type. The New G6 made its Asian debut at the same show, two weeks after its European launch.

A year later XPENG opened its 500th store outside China in Surabaya in the same country, as that story describes. The markets page shows where XPENG sells, and the XPENG X9 page has the car.
