In issue 22/2024, published on 10 October, auto motor und sport put the XPENG G9 against the Nio EL6, and the G9 won the comparison test.
The car tested was the rear-wheel-drive long-range G9: 230 kW, 98 kWh, up to 570 km WLTP and 19.4 kWh per 100 km.
The measurement is the point. The magazine writes that after the updated Porsche Taycan the G9 now also breaks the 300 kW mark, if only briefly, and that it charges at an average of 213 kW from 10 to 80 per cent. An average across the whole window says far more about a charging session than a peak does, and this is the first time an independent European test put a number on XPENG’s 800-volt claim.
Two other figures in the same paragraph have to be kept apart from it. The text says the car adds 100 km in seven minutes and 300 km in 23, but notes that this is according to internal measurements. Whose measurements is not stated, and there is no charging power, temperature or state of charge.
What else the magazine noted
The boot is 660 litres. The magazine praises the contoured seats, the build quality and the leather, and picks out the passenger screen: the passenger can run Netflix and YouTube on it while the driver sees nothing, thanks to a privacy filter.
The options list on the German car is again two items, special paint and an electrically deployable tow bar. The warranty is seven years to 160,000 km across the German range. The G9 is 4.89 m long and came at the time with 78.2 or 98 kWh and rear- or all-wheel drive. XPENG had been selling in Germany for only a few months.
Two numbers measuring different things
XPENG quoted a 319 kW peak from NAF’s El-Prix in December 2023. Here the magazine says the car only briefly breaks 300 kW. Both can be true: one is a peak on a Norwegian charger, the other a German magazine’s account of a whole charging session. Using them together means saying what is being measured.
Markus Schrick, head of XPENG in Germany, said the first comparison test underlines the quality of the brand’s models. He is XPENG’s own man; the magazine is the independent party. The G9 winning WK Snelladen in 2026 is the next independent measurement of the G9, and the XPENG G9 page has it as it is sold now.
